Food Service Nutrition

Bloomington Public Schools' Food Service Department provides healthy and nutritious breakfasts and lunches each day of the school year. Our dedicated staff serves over 1.4 million meals each school year, every day…rain or shine. School meals provide nourishment that is important to children’s growth, academic achievement and physical performance.

New USDA Lunch Effective September 2012

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 provided the most comprehensive changes to the school nutrition program in over fifteen years.  These new guidelines, monitored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), represent significant changes to the school meal program are intended to result in healthier school meals nationwide.
The new school lunch guidelines are effective for meals starting in September 2012. Changes for the school breakfast program will be phased in beginning September 2013.
The most significant changes from this Act for school lunches for this year are:

  • An increased quantity of combined fruits and vegetables
  • Wider variety of fruits and vegetables offered during a week, including specific dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
  • Calorie minimum and maximum levels by grade level
  • Half of all grain products offered must be whole grain
  • Only fat free or low fat milk
  • Sodium reductions
  • No trans fats allowed
  • Saturated fat limits

Fortunately, Bloomington School’s Food Service Department has been aware that these new guidelines were coming and has made significant progress towards compliance over the last several years. Further detail regarding these new guidelines can be found here.
